Ravel: String Quartet in F major

Praised for their passionate and vivid performances, the Regency Quartet is a prize-winning string quartet based in London, who most recently won the 2025 Royal Over-Seas League String Ensembles Prize. This programme showcases masterworks from different eras of the string quartet. Where better to start the concert than with Haydn, the "Father of the String Quartet"? The Op. 20/4 is one of the quartet’s most treasured works to perform, particularly the "affettuoso" second movement which shares the beautiful thematic material across all four instruments. The Regency Quartet enjoys including works that are less often performed, to share them with a wider audience and to showcase the quartet’s diverse playing styles. Written during the Second World War, Michael Tippett’s Second String Quartet is notable for its abundant lyricism and graceful dancing rhythms. The quartet has enjoyed exploring this joyful piece. The second half of the programme begins with Jessie Montgomery's ‘Strum’, which draws on American folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement. It begins with fleeting nostalgia and transforms into ecstatic celebration. The programme concludes with Ravel's String Quartet, with 2025 marking 150 years since the composer's birth. Brimming with expression and colour, this masterpiece is full of flair and excitement!
