Australian violinist Catherina Lee and American pianist-composer Miles Walter, both expats living in the UK, met in Cornwall at Open Chamber Music at IMS Prussia Cove. Together, they bring an exciting and varied program to King's Place. The first half is bookended by masterpieces by friends and mutual admirers Debussy and Stravinsky: Debussy's famous wartime sonata, his final major work, and Stravinsky's fascinating, kaleidoscopic, preposterously virtuosic Duo Concertant, which recalls and refracts ancient Greek rhetoric and form. From these endpoints, the evening travels via strange linkages through idiosyncratic works by Mozart and Pejačevič into a central lostness, in the form of Kurtág's aching, cryptic 1979 Tre pezzi. In the second half, we return to the pre-war Francophone world, featuring a gem by Lili Boulanger and, finally, Franck's celebrated, cyclical 1886 Sonata, a hearty, satisfying final course.
