Britten: Three Divertimenti
Haydn: String Quartet in D Op.20 No.4
interval
Beethoven: String Quartet in C Op.59 No.3 'Razumovsky'

As four musicians heralding from across the globe (Japan, Korea, USA and the UK), the Kleio Quartet feels a unanimously deep connection to the string quartet repertoire and live for the vitality that comes from exploring it together.

The works the Quartet will present chart a particularly broad range of emotional and spectral qualities. Britten's Three Divertimenti, a work on the edge and yet always grounded, displays three character pieces each replete with musical tropes from marches to burlesques. Its harmonic language is unmistakably Britten's, with a certain acknowledgement of predecessors like Stravinsky and Bartok always present. From Britten they move to Haydn – the Quartet's musical home. Humour is rarely very far from the surface in this quartet. Finally, a work at the very core of the Kleio Quartet's repertoire, Beethoven's Razumovsky Quartet in C major, Op. 59 No. 3. This extraordinary utopia of dissonance and exhuberance opens with a harmonic space walk, before bursting into full flair. Replete with adventurous part-writing and harmony, this quartet stands as a great cornerstone of the string quartet repertoire.
