Concerts: Barbican Quartet at Kings Place
Wednesday 7 April 2021 at 7.30pm
Kings Place

Mozart: String Quartet in D major, K575
Janacek: String Quartet No.1 "Kreutzer Sonata"
Brahms: String Quartet in A minor, Op.51 No.2

The Barbican Quartet, an acclaimed and exciting young ensemble, are winners of several prizes including first prize at the 2019 Joseph Joachim International Chamber Music Competition. Their programme juxtaposes works from three different periods, and includes Janacek’s thrilling interpretation of Leo Tolstoy’s novella "The Kreutzer Sonata". Mozart’s D major "Prussian" quartet is one of his most singing and colourful, giving the spotlight to each individual instrument which was a truly novel approach to the quartet medium. The programme culminates with Brahms’ second quartet which reveals an immense range of expression, from the melancholy opening, through the highly unsettled and unusual Scherzo, to the absolute tour de force which is the Finale.
